Aspiring Travel Writer of the Week: Efia Sulter
Efia’s website is Effy Talks Life and was launched in 2012.
Bio: In 2016, Efia left Scotland for warmer pastures and four years later she’s still going. Since then she’s traveled solo to 4 continents and now it’s her mission to empower other women to travel the world solo too. If she could describe her ethos in a hashtag it would #makelifeanadventure oh, and #blackgirlstraveltoo!
Here is Efia‘s Q&A About her Life as a Content Creator
If Part-Time, what is your day job? I also have a Pinterest Marketing agency Effy Creative.
How long have you been a blogger/writer/photographer? 8 years.
Where do you call home? Melbourne, but I’m from Scotland! I’ve been living abroad here since 2016.
How many countries have you been to? 20+.
How many continents have you been to? 4.
Top 5 destinations on your travel to-do list: Colombia, Chile, Italy, Greece, and Africa (I know it’s a continent but so many places!).
Earliest travel memory: My first flight to the Dominican Republic. I’d just turned 8 and the flight attendant gave me a bag of sweeties because it was my birthday. It was a dream.
Favorite Travel Vlogger: Christian LeBlanc of Lost Le Blanc I’ve been watching his stuff for years and somehow he still manages to keep it all relatable.
Favorite Travel Photographer: Thea Bronlund, she takes stunning nature shots and just manages to capture a feeling so beautifully.
Favorite Travel Websites: Wheregoesrose.com, heyciara.com, spiritedpursuit.com
The trip that turned you from a vacationer to a traveler: I’ve never really thought about there being a difference between the two.
The trip that turned you into a travel writer/blogger/photographer: I’d been blogging on and off throughout my time at uni but when I went on a year-long solo trip in 2016 the writing just kind of took a back seat. As the one year trip rolled into two I received a question on Instagram asking how my experiences had been as a black traveler.
I realized it warranted a bigger response than I could give on Instagram and was a small part of a much bigger problem. The lack of representation of black people in the travel space inspired me to start writing again because at that moment my why became bigger than just me.
First steps to becoming a content creator: I’d already been writing my blog for several years, it was really just steering it in a different direction and trying to work out which of my existing experiences were worth sharing.
Are you an independent traveler or do you participate in organized media trips?: I am focused on organized media trips. I mainly plan my own trips but I’ve done some collaborations with tourist boards and travel brands too.
The social media platform driving the most traffic to my site: Pinterest. I create a lot of fresh content and my tip is you shouldn’t underestimate the power of keywords! Don’t just rely on scheduling tools either.
My favorite tool/app for social media (and why): I loved Tweetdeck because I can sit down and schedule all my Tweets for the month in an hour or so pretty efficiently, oh and it’s free.
My favorite WordPress plugin (and why): WooCommerce as I’ve just launched my first digital product – Girl, Solo – A Modern Guide To Travelling Alone, which is an ebook about solo travel!
Favorite Travel Twitter Chat: Being in Australia it’s hard to join any with the time differences.
Favorite Travel Blogger Facebook Group: Travel Is Life Tribe.
#1 Organization I recommend for new bloggers: Asana for managing all the tasks you have to do!
If only I had the time, I’d do/finish…… My latest email sequence for the free chapter of my ebook.
My top tip for aspiring travel writers and bloggers!
There will be times when you feel like giving up, those are the times you need to dig in your heels and keep going.
Best travel tip for travelers: Don’t be afraid to travel solo, it really is the most beautiful adventure.
